Why Your Cat Prefers a Simple Cardboard Box Over a Fancy New Bed

Many cat owners have experienced the same funny situation: after spending money on a soft, luxurious cat bed, their cat completely ignores it and chooses to sit inside the empty cardboard box instead. While this behavior may seem strange to humans, there are actually several natural reasons why cats love cardboard boxes so much.

One of the main reasons is security. Cats instinctively seek out small, enclosed spaces where they feel protected from potential danger. In the wild, hidden spaces help cats stay safe while resting or observing their surroundings. A cardboard box creates a cozy shelter that allows cats to relax while still feeling protected on all sides.

Boxes also provide warmth. Cardboard is an excellent insulator that helps trap body heat. Cats naturally prefer warm sleeping spots because their body temperature is slightly higher than that of humans. A simple box may feel warmer and more comfortable than an open bed placed in a cooler part of the house.

Another reason is stress reduction. Studies have shown that enclosed spaces can help cats feel calmer and less anxious. When cats are stressed, nervous, or adjusting to changes, they often seek hiding places to feel secure. This is why newly adopted cats frequently hide inside boxes during their first days in a new home.

Texture also plays a role. Many cats enjoy scratching and rubbing against cardboard because it provides satisfying resistance for their claws and scent-marking behavior. The natural smell of cardboard may also feel less overwhelming than heavily scented new fabrics or materials found in some pet beds.

Curiosity is another factor. Cats are naturally attracted to new objects in their environment, especially ones they can climb into or explore. An empty box becomes both a hiding spot and a source of entertainment. Some cats enjoy jumping in and out, chewing the edges, or simply watching the world from inside their “fort.”

In contrast, fancy cat beds may sometimes feel too exposed, too soft, or unfamiliar. Cats can be surprisingly picky about sleeping surfaces, and they often choose comfort based on instinct rather than appearance or price.

Fortunately, owners do not need to stop buying comfortable beds altogether. Many cats enjoy both beds and boxes depending on their mood. Placing a soft blanket inside a cardboard box or positioning the bed in a quiet, enclosed area may encourage cats to use it more often.

At the end of the day, cats do not care about luxury the way humans do. What matters most to them is feeling safe, warm, relaxed, and comfortable. That simple cardboard box may look boring to us, but to a cat, it can feel like the perfect little home.
